We’ve lost Paul Curran, our master guest columnist and prolific comment-leaver

Such sad news to have to spread. Good-bye to my favorite MBA.

Those of us who’ve grown to love the lively words that bounced from the head and fingers of Paul Curran will never be the same.

The writer from Canada has died, according to his neighbor Steve Watson.

I received this email on the contact tab from my blog:

With great sadness I have to tell you that Paul Curran has passed away. Paul passed last week.

I found the email this morning. I arrived yesterday. Steve Watson was listed as the photographer in the If We Were Having Coffee Sunday column Paul had me post here on Sept. 11 after his emergency operation.

I could not find an obituary through search engines.

Paul lived in Hamilton, Ontario…

Even if he apologizes

You all know what’s happened tonight.  The yuge video of Donald Trump being an asshole.  Talking about women disrespectfully.  Claiming that, because he is a star, he can get women to put up with him being sexually abusive.

Right now, I’m waiting for Trump to put out a video apology.  Or something.

But how can he apologize for who he is.  Who we — including the folks who planned to vote for him — always knew he was?

Every day it seemed, there was a statement from this woman or that, saying that he hit on them or disrespected them.

Still, most of the GOP went along with him. Endorsed him.  Sighed and signed on.

Paul Ryan.  Mitch McConnell.  John McCain.  Kelly Ayotte.  Ted Cruz.  Marco Rubio.

Right now, folks are lining up to say “he’s a bad man.”  “I can’t support him.”

Donald Trump is the same, vile man he was yesterday, before this film came out.  They always knew it.

If Trump releases a video where he assures us, with the deepest sincerity, that he respects women, he will of course leave lots of folk out:  Hispanics.  Muslims.  Blacks.  Everybody but rich white men.

Me?  I’m not ready to make nice.  Go to Hell, Donald Trump.  And don’t let the screen door hit you on the way out.

Here We Go Again

When it happened, it was barely in the news.  I tried to write about it, but couldn’t.  I still can’t.  What more can be said that wasn’t said before.  The fact that it still happens says it all.

It could just as easily have been somebody I care about.  Or somebody you care about.

It WAS somebody named Jacob, which is eerie for me since I have a son named Jacob.

Another shooting of children.  Another death.  Another funeral.

If there was ever a way to fight back, though, to show that the guns don’t really win, this was the way to do it.  With superheroes.

A young superhero is dead.  At his funeral, his mother encouraged everybody to come dressed as a superhero, because Jacob was a superhero and wanted to save people. It was a touching tribute to Jacob, and a wonderful, heartfelt gesture by his Mom.

His family, his community is devastated.  We are all diminished.

Because we do nothing.  Again and again and again.

Fucking guns.  Fucking second amendment.  FUCKING NRA.

Elections matter for a whole lot of things.

Who is Mike Pence?

I mean besides Donald Trump’s VP candidate who gets almost no coverage in the press.

He’s the guy who decided to defund Planned Parenthood!

 

 

So tonight, when (if) you watch the VP Debate being held here in Virginia, remember that misogyny comes in quieter forms too.  Like from those gentlemen who simply want to make sure that women have lots of babies and no access to healthcare screening for breast and ovarian or for sexually transmitted diseases.

It’s a health issue.

It’s an economic issue.

It’s common sense — keep public funding of organizations who serve the public.

How is That a Good Thing?

So the New York Times posted a story saying that Donald Trump, that brilliant businessman who is gonna “Make America Great Again,” because he makes such great deals, LOST $1 BILLION in one year — 1995.  

Then, he hired tax lawyers and accountants who cleaned up the mess for him and spread the losses over nearly two decades, so that Mr. Trump did not have to pay taxes.

“He’s a genius!” Proclaim two leading Trump sycophants, Chris Christie and Rudy Giuliani.

A “genius” businessman capable of “Making America Great Again” doesn’t lose $1 Billion in one year.

PERIOD.

What is wrong with anybody who thinks otherwise?
