It’s Duncan’s First Birthday!
There are presents!
There are treats!
There are new things that squeak!
And there are these damn hats.
What’s with these damn hats?

I am going to you, Mom. Hard. Really, really hard.
Now that he’s a year old, Duncan is no longer a puppy. So he has to behave. Right? Right?
Actually he’s started behaving better already. He didn’t eat the hat. That’s a start.

Isn’t it funny how they always look a bit embarrassed when posing with a hat. Mine managed to allow a pic with her Santa hat, but didn’t keep it on for long. Happy birthday celebration to you and Duncan. We both know moms get a huge kick out of planning parties for our babies, four legged or two legged.

Duncan is adorable (happy b-day, Duncan), but I can tell he is pissed at his mom because of that hat. 🙂

He is often pissed at his mom. Like my other, human son. It’s in the job description!

I have a new client with my freelance work, and it’s a lot more hours spent in front of a computer screen. MacKenzie, my 11 year old lab with more energy than me, doesn’t appreciate it. Occasionally I’ll be engrossed in something on the laptop screen and will hear a noise … and look over to see her rolling around, and when she notices me looking at her she’ll freeze like this and stare until I get on the floor and pay attention to her.
Smart dog. 🙂

Happy Birthday Duncan … but bummer not eating the hat. How’s his training going?

He is doing better, thanks, Frank. But now that he is an “adult” he has to behave properly all the time … right? Right???

Well, as you know, when adults are in a group, they can exhibit worse behavior than teens.

Thanks, Mae! He enjoyed his birthday, but we are doling out his toys bit by bit. Because he tears them apart, bit by bit…

Why do humans do that to dogs? Dogs don’t like that you know.

I know but I was expecting to get a picture if him eating his hat. Who knew that he’d cooperate!

You have raised a well mannered dog (not a puppy) who will tolerate your bad behavior. Now you need to learn not to be rude.

Actually, he is a devil. It is no doubt my fault, though. But he is learning.

I’m incredibly impressed that you managed to get a shot of him sitting still, wearing a hat (even if he doesn’t exactly seem to be pleased about the hat). Happy Woofday to Duncan. Handsome young man. Yep.

There was bribery involved in getting this picture. Significant quantities of Zuke’s treats were used … He had a nice day. Thanks for your wishes!

A year? Already? Say it ain’t so! Like like 7 people years, right? Or did I do the math wrong…again? I feel seven years older, so I may be right.

Yup. A year. Already (although we got him in June so it’s not a year together). I am with you on the feeling older bit. Maybe it’s being jerked around by the dog…

You know, Lynn, you’re right — he does look both handsome and good. I’ll give him the former, but the latter? Rarely!

They grow so fast! Our young cat will be 3. Of course she doesn’t act it. That’s the good news and the bad news (as she chews the electrical cords).

There must be a happy medium age where these critters are healthy and well behaved. I’ll let you know when Duncan gets there, if I notice before the nano-second disappears!

Sorry to say that even though my Old Man (Bruiser) is more than 11 years old now, he still chews the blinds when I leave the house, if given the chance. He cannot be contained in a crate (loooooooong story), so my solution is that I’ve carefully arranged the furniture to protect the blinds, including a large ceramic vase filled with big rocks that serves no other purpose than to keep him from mauling the living room blinds. Every single time I leave the house, I have to push the dining room chairs up against the windows in the dining room (apparently he won’t go after the blinds if any hard work is involved). I also have a latch lock on my bedroom door, and lock my bedroom from the outside, so he doesn’t destroy the blinds in there. And, of course, there’s the rock-filled vase in the living room that’s about 30″ high. All to keep him from destroying YET ANOTHER set of blinds. My sister says I’m insane, but I just shove the chairs around and tell her to shut up already. Apparently, he trained me, instead of the other way around. *sigh*

Yes, Duncan is all about the maturity. This morning on our dog walk he ran up to and jumped on the park groundskeeper. You know, the guy who hollers at everybody for having their dog off the leash … (He loves Duncan, though, so he didn’t yell at me or Duncs!)

Yes, I don’t think that really qualifies one as an adult — at least not since the Victorian age! Still, all his adult teeth are in, so there is hope that the furniture will survive.
