I love it when my bloggin’ buddies say things so well that all I need to do is click!
I really did. I thought to myself, “Self, I’m not gonna say anything about it. There’s no sense wading into political waters because you’ll just drown in them.”
But I can’t ignore it. Everyone is talking about it. It was all over the news today. And yesterday. And the day before. All over my Facebook feed. It’s everywhere I fucking look. I can’t escape it. It’s like trying to run away from the sun.
“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag,” Trump said, “to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out. He’s fired. He’s fired!’ ”
Unfortunately, many people agree with him. They are going to quit watching the NFL if players don’t stop protesting, apparently. They are going to boycott the games. The NFL will no longer get their money.

I personally don’t care if a person stands, sits, or kneels in front of our flag. They just better respect it. This is my country and I would rather be here than anywhere, even with all it’s flaws. Try living in Africa or Russia if you don’t believe me. My vote however is that these men need to get off their knees and do something productive. Don’t just complain about the injustices in our society stand up against them (oh, you will have to get off your knees first). Be mentors, inspire our youth, volunteer at schools, churches, hospitals, charities, etc. Teach the youth of America to be decent, law abiding, empathetic human beings who care about others and stand up to tyranny and injustice the right way (whatever that might be). Complaining and sitting (kneeling) around doing nothing will not work. Rioting, throwing garbage, using weapons, forming gangs, spouting racial slurs will not work. And btw, get 10 people in a room and you will see some type of injustice. My dad used to say – get ten people in a room, if one of them isn’t stupid (or crazy, or a bigot, or…), it might be YOU who IS.
Also, and just to get it out of my system, how many of those men kneeling on the fields and arenas knew that certain teammates were using drugs, beating their spouses, abusing their pets, wielding weapons, etc. AND DID NOTHING to stop that nonsense. Maybe an ethics clause needs to be added to their contracts.

Actually a lot of pro sports athletes very much do what you say. I live in the D.C. Area and our local papers are filled with stories of them working with troubled youth, riding with police, etc. many are very appreciative of where they are and give back.
Last I heard, kneeling WAS a sign of respect. I see nothing disrespectful. They are not turning their backs. They are not giving the finger. They are not mooning it. In fact, perhaps kneeling is s greater sign of respect.
As to your last point, it is a topic for a different post. But I will say that the world and our country is filled with people who overlook egregious behavior in others. How else can we explain the menace in the White House?

The sports organizations have politicized their games, and their sponsors have been using patriotism to make profits for decades. Since that’s the case, the players have every right to make a political statement. I didn’t see anything disrespectful. They quietly dropped to one knee. There was no screaming or throwing things at the flag. The only people yelling during the anthem were those who didn’t like the athletes kneeling. That’s their right, but it’s kind of ironic. I find it odd that the “patriots” lined up at the beer counters in the stadiums and those sitting in their recliners at home scratching their balls while the anthem is being played have no problem with beer companies using the symbolism of the flag to make a profit.

I had no TV and internets for 2 whole days. 😡 My radio broke, too. 👿 I had nothing to do other than listen to Pandora, assemble a jigsaw puzzle and compose comments for any conceivable subject. 😉
