Cut It Out, 2017

Dear 2017,

Cut it out — right now.  Just stop being an asshole.  You’re far too young.

We already have to deal with Donald Trump sullying the Oval Office.

We already see our rights, our civil liberties, our healthcare, Medicare, Social Security, all flushed down the toilet.  [No.  I’m not going to illustrate a flushing toilet.  What do you take me for?]

But you’re off to a bad start otherwise, too.

Stop taking people.  Or stop taking good people. You need to take someone?  I have some suggestions.  Call me, 2017, so the U.S. Secret Service doesn’t.

But Mary?  You took Mary?  You left Trump and took Mary?

Jeez, 2017.  Cut. It. Out.

  1. My 27-year-old daughter told me she just discovered the Mary Tyler Moore show and is binge-watching. She was timeless – RIP.

I have realized that the best way to describe Trump is as the devil’s evil twin.

  6. Enjoyed her. At the time I didn’t recognize the significance but as you say TV normalizes everything. Now we have reality TV in the White House. Mary RIP.

I was reminded this morning just how groundbreaking MTM was as Mary Richards. I remember watching her show, sensing something important happening with it (I was just coming into my teens in 1970) but not really realizing the scope of what was being produced and offered at the time. The world has lost another amazing Woman/Feminist/Voice

    • Me too. I mostly watched it as reruns as I tried to (and did) become a single professional. I didn’t really see it that way, either. That, of course is the beauty of good TV — it brings new stuff normalcy while making you laugh (and cry). 😪

  8. Thank you for sharing! Those of us who grew up with Mary adored her. May she rest in peace.

  9. A sad day, indeed. Are you sure 2017 has your number? It seems it has everything else back passwords.

  10. I don’t know. She might be kind of glad. Love is all around. Except for now.

  11. Dick Gautier (remember Hymie from Get Smart?) and Miguel Ferrer as well as MTM and Butch Trucks. Every time there is breaking news on TV, I hold my breath wondering if another cultural icon is gone or if the commander-in-chief demander-and-thief has gotten us closer to WW3.

  12. I agree. There is something foul brewing already and I don’t like it.

  13. It took Butch Trucks, Allman Brothers drummer, today too.

And we’ve got Cheeto doing his best to ream this country.

    This year stinks already.

    • At the end of last year, I consciously did not wish away 2016. I was very careful to be careful because I had experience.

Two previous times, I had a horrible year — 1981 and 2000. I was toasting them each away in early December of those years, anxious for the new year to come. BOTH times the following year was WORSE. So this time I was careful.

      It’s not my fault. ;(

  14. I loved her show, and watched it every week. She was a good woman. If only it had been Chuckles, instead.
