This year I feel incredibly lucky at Thanksgiving. Nobody at my feast will have voted for Donald Trump.
Nobody.
And they will all be relatives.
Didn’t I tell you that I’m lucky? It’s true — I will gladly spend then next two days cooking for them.
But I know that not everybody is as lucky as me. I feel your pain, I really do. One of my brothers voted for Trump, as did a nephew and, I’m pretty sure, a great nephew. But none of them are coming — they don’t usually come so I did not banish them.
It’s hard to talk to folks about this election and why we feel so strongly that the wrong side won.
It’s hard to talk about this election and not place all Trump voters into Hillary’s stupid basket of deplorables.
It’s hard to talk about this election to Trump voters and not slap them upside the head for being stupid, for placing our democracy at risk, for threatening the future of the planet either by a Trump tiff or by his unwillingness to accept that climate change is real and to do something about it.
For those of you who need assistance, I give you this video — with a shout-out to my friend Karen:
Not that it will change anything.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who are celebrating.
Love that video!

Thanks, Gail. Hope you had a good, non-confrontational holiday.

I did, thanks. No political discussions at all. That’s one of the benefits of having a 1 1/2 year-old to chase around the house – it’s a welcome distraction of light during these dark times.

My son is sick so we will be missing out on Thanksgiving. It’s a Christmas miracle? We have to say “Christmas” for every holiday now–first executive order.

I’m sorry he’s sick, and hope it’s not serious. But nobody can argue with that excuse.

My greatest Christmas was the Christmas I got my tonsils out and couldn’t go anywhere. Am I misanthrope?

I’ll be one butter knife away from all of it. But, if you/we can’t talk about anything but politics at the holiday meal, then all is not right with the family. Happy Thanksgiving. ☺

Great point! Keep the steak knives hidden!

A family I know is trying to ban any political discussion from the Thanksgiving table in the hope that it’ll keep them from carving each other instead of the turkey. I hope it works.

It might. It wouldn’t for me, though!

Happy Thanksgiving, Elyse. Usually, there is a big crowd at my sister’s house. Howevah, my kid just moved to New Joisey, my mom just got out of the hospital and is in rehab, and my dad is in assisted living, and there’s no way we would be able to handle him. So, it will be my sister, my nephew and the 3 dogs. My sister and I will think of the Hairy Cheez Doodle as we take the guts out of the bird and stab it later on. I’m pretty sure the 3 dogs hate him, too, because they are wonderful judges of character.

😆. Dogs should have been allowed to vote.

Oh this was too good. Loved it. I did yell and stomp my feet about “T man” but- what’s going on with all these repubs on Fox news who still want to see “H” in the hoose-cow?

That was never going to happen — at least no legally. They looked and looked. Just another thing Trump said to appeal to the haters …

Yes, I know. All of the “lock her up” was a ploy to stir up folks and cause them to vote for him. I feel for her. Really I do.

He already said he’s not going to prosecute her. I’m sure his voters are now making up perfectly reasonable justifications for why Hillary shouldn’t actually go to prison.
Besides, Trump has a new set of mortal enemies now – the New York Times and the cast of Hamilton.

I fear one of his supporters will fulfill that campaign promise 😬

I heard someone today say to get someone to uninvited themselves, just start talking about the election. … of course my message is the counter. oh well – it takes a lot to make the world go around. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Thank you … and for the record … I know the family table will be a mix of both sides … but I don’t think politics will come up … then again, that my change if our niece in-laws decide to stop by

My daughter and me only this time, and we are so on the same page we can finish each others sentences. I would seriously consider just walking around with this video on a loop though, for anyone who needs some education. Have a great day Elyse!

You cracked me up! I wonder if we can get it filtered into those places where you can’t get away from the TV and it’s always on bloomin’ Fox!
Enjoy your daughter and your holiday!

Enjoy the cooking, Elyse. My wife refers to Thanksgiving as “Women’s Labor Day.”
Our Thanksgiving table will include 4 Hillaryites and 2 Trumpers. Which is appropriate because this is California, where Hillary got nearly 2/3’s of the popular vote.

I think I love your wife. She’s such a character.
I normally get quite stressed over the cooking; this year I’m not. There’s just too much other stuff to stress out over!

Take four deep breaths and exhale slowly. And I hope you and yours have a Happy Thanksgiving. 🙂

My dinner table: me, Jim, Son, Daughter. Small group. We are aligned. If we were to go to the big party (Jim’s family) 90% of them or more will have voted for trump. Logistics don’t allow us to join them this year but I’m not sure I’d want to.

That would be tough. Sometimes it’s best to have a good excuse to not get together for the holidays!

Yes, and I’ve forced the issue more the last few years. But this time it’s just the way it works out. Son’s flight comes in when the big family would be eating already. They are more than 2 hours away. It just don’t work. So right now we’re having fun, making pecan bars and drinking the rest of the Irish whiskey and anticipating making sticky toffee pudding tomorrow. 🙂 Good stuff. Good people.

Ooh sounds good. Tomorrow is pie baking day, and everything else that can be made the day before. I’m all set!
Have a wonderful feast!
