Long-Term Health Effects of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bombs Not as Dire as Public Perceives
The detonation of atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 resulted in horrific casualties and devastation. The long-term effects of radiation exposure also increased cancer rates in the survivors. But public perception of the rates of cancer and birth defects among survivors and their children is in fact greatly exaggerated when compared to the reality revealed by comprehensive follow-up studies. The reasons for this mismatch and its implications are discussed in a Perspectives review of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki survivor studies published in the August issue of the journal GENETICS, a publication of the Genetics Society of America. Now that I live on the West Coast, I’m hoping that the Big One will shake us loose. Sure, I’ll probably die of fright or being sucked into something I would never want to be in…or be cut off from civilization for years, but, considering the Trumpaggedon that could come, I’m liking my chances of earthquake/tsunami.
You know, I just finished a book about Charlie Manson. He craved attention and thought he deserved it. Family members who weren’t totally devoted to him were ousted (alive in the beginning, dead in the end). When he couldn’t gain enough fame being the leader of his hippie Family and trying to get record deals by schmoozing Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, he turned to violence. Any attention was better than obscurity. Sound like anyone you won’t be voting for in November?

Yeah, I figured that. From a physics point of view we were told that the land would be uninhabitable for centuries – well that was only 70 years ago and other than a memorial at ground zero, there is no sign of the devastation. It makes sense that the same exaggeration would be true for medical concerns. Which is not to diminish in any way the horrific impact of a weapon like that.

Yeah, the big ones are a problem, but one of my concerns is that many nuclear powers now have little nuclear weapons called “strategic” which are designed to be used in battlefield conditions with minimum radiation released. They can be used to wipe out a large facility or compound with minimal risk . The thing is if you start throwing around battlefield nukes, you are asking for retaliation with big nukes. i cringe whenever i hear of a battle plan that includes these little puppies – it is asking for an escalation.

Right, Paul. And in addition to the neutron warheads with limited radiation they now have what’s called dial-a-yield. The size of the explosion can be adjusted to fit the target. This would open up countless options for Donald.

Recently, I asked a friend of mine who is in the CIA about neutron bombs. He said they have been eliminated.
But I hadn’t heard of dial a yield. Our weapons are certainly interesting. Guess I should pay more attention.

I hadn’t either, Elyse, until a recent article in USA Today. There are in B-61 bombs in various places in Europe under NATO, including the base at Incirlik, in Turkey.

The scary part is that they have become so much a part of the military landscape that little attention is paid to them. The detonation of one in anger would have untenable repercussions. I was reading a true short story written by a military pilot who regularly had nukes as a payload when flying deterrent patrols. His base was close to a border and the Russians had begun playing “test the defenses” games again to see how close they can get with bombers before getting a response. This “requires” an increased deterrence with more armed planes in the air at any given time. Anyway, he had been busy flying missions and was very tired when he landed his last mission of the day. To remove nukes from planes, the plane is often parked at the end of the runway while the bombs are removed. The plane is returned to its hanger and an officer has to stay with the bombs until the guys who handle them arrived to take possession. At no time can a nuclear weapon be left unattended while out of its bunker. Anyway, the bomb guys got delayed and the pilot was tired so he climbed up on top of a nuclear bomb to rest and he fell asleep. He was sleeping soundly when the bomb guys arrived to wake him up. He was seriously punished for sleeping on top of a nuclear bomb when he was supposed to be attending to the security. Now that is getting way too used to nukes for my liking – but you can just see it happening.

My father developed a lifelong ability to close his eyes and be asleep in seconds while in the navy. But probably never on a nuke.

Such a glowing report. And all this time we had mushroomed the effects of nuclear radiation way out of proportion. Come to think of it, even the Donald’s bouffant combover resembles a mushroom. And yet, there’s nothing underneath it.

Phew! I knew the concern over a Trump Presidency with his stumpy little fingers all over the button when responding to some random tweet that might appear to criticize him was in reality not really a concern. Canadians everywhere are relieved.
