My sense of humor has gotten me through the most difficult of times. Illness. Death. George W.
It got me through the early days of Donald Trump’s candidacy — because after all his is a walking joke, isn’t he?
Every one of this progressively outrageous actions has left me sputtering. But I’ve always found a thread, although rarely enough for a blog post lately.
But it’s just not funny any more.
This morning, GOP Candidate for President of the United States called upon Russia to hack Democratic Candidate for President and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s email. He encouraged them to do so. He sanctioned a foreign government — one that the United States has had challenging relations with since the Russian Revolution in 1917.
As reported by the New York Times, the man we cannot let become president said:
“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Mr. Trump said, staring directly into the cameras. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”
Elections Matter. This one more than most.
Volunteer. Donate. Convince everyone you know to vote for Hillary Clinton.
This man cannot become our president.
I feel you , totally !

I have been amazed at all of the people who say they would never vote for Trump (for whatever reason) still rabidly follow and will vote for Hillary. And this is after everything that she has done, beginning with demonizing the women who accused her husband of sexual improprieties. Now I know that some of you on the left will start with the “He’s a sexist” etc. nonsense, but if you are truly honest with yourselves, you will admit that Hillary is no better than Trump and to continue the attack that he is running a hate filled campaign is just intellectually dishonest. Also, to say that Trump followers are uniformed and blindly follow him, what about (some) Hillary supporters? The bottom line is this-both sides are filled with people who blindly follow their candidate. Both sides have supporters who are not truly informed. And to those of you on the left and extreme left-Please get the idea that just because people don’t agree with every word you say it doesn’t make them a sexist, homophobe, islamaphobe etc. People just disagree with you. That is the beauty of the 1st amendment. I don’t have to agree with you. BTW-I am pretty much a Libertarian these days based on the fact that both of the candidates are not worth my vote.

@ Zen Hiker,
You sound like a person who is willing to think and reason about the election, which is more than I can say about some of my relatives. So, in the interest of honest communications, I invite you to check out this recent editorial which appeared in the NY Times. (Please don’t be misled by the title – it is a sober and even-handed piece.)

I have to disagree with you in that it is an “even handed piece.” Once again, the mainstream media has left out many of the things as to why people really have a problem with Hillary. Every time something happens, her first instinct is to lie. In regards to the truth, even though I voted for Bill twice, I don’t think neither Bill or Hillary has had an honest word pass through their lips in the last 25 years. It is unfortunate, but she thinks the voting middle class is just stupid. Neither candidate is attractive, and we are in trouble no matter who is elected.

@Zen,
Did you read the article?

Sorry, but you are simply parroting Fox News here. Yes. They both lie. But the difference is in magnitude is absurd.
Take for example the Foundations. Hillary meets with folks she would meet with for her job anyway, they donate money that helps pay for much needed medicines and disaster relief across the world. Trump buys a painting of himself with the money other folks have donated.
That is one example. Trump’s whole person, his whole claim to fame is scamming people and keeping their money to enrich himself. He has done nothing. NOTHING to make the world a better place.
Oops. That’s part of my post.
I thought you were a reasonable person, posting reasonable questions. Now I am thinking you are a troll.

Thanks, Jim. I just replied to Hiker that this comment inspired me to get off my duff and write a thoughtful political piece. I used to do that a lot in previous election cycles, but really haven’t had much energy this time around, and have been so disheartened.

Oops. I hit send instead of return.
I will, possibly today, or possibly in the next couple of days, write a post explaining my reasons for voting FOR Hillary as well as voting AGAINST Trump.
Your timing couldn’t be better, though, as I had been thinking of doing so for weeks but didn’t get around to it.
So thanks. I’ll post a link in this comment thread when I post it.

Thanks for that link. It’s an excellent article. Alas, it doesn’t give any recommendations on how to undermine the deep beliefs these folks have.
Hope you’re doing well. I haven’t been blogging or even reading blogs much. Just feeling so ‘Meh’ about it all!

He may be more than off the wall, but I’m with Jim … the man could win …. which is a telling sign about our voters. Then again, his election would be President Obama’s fault.

Everything is Obama’s fault, Frank. Everything!
LIke you, I underestimated (misunderestimated?) Trump’s chances of getting this far. I won’t underestimate him again. He could very well win, and that is the scariest thing I can think of.

I think that depends on one’s definition of “fault” and what one considers to be society’s ills.

it’s interesting – I’ve been expecting a push back against the government but I have to say I am surprised it came this way. People are so tired of politicians and the government acting to protect the wealthy, acting against the best interests of the people. I figured there would be more home made terrorism, or even an armed up rising but that they should vote in a malignant narcissist was a surprise. The only strong reason they give is because they are voting against the regular politicians.
Best of Luck

Unfortunately, there is a likelihood that Trump will actually be elected. I blogged about it and cited a Mike Meyers article that lists 5 reasons why this is so, the most important of which is the “Jesse Ventura effect” (I think).

Don’t sweat it. If he’s not elected, fine. If he is elected, he’ll be impeached in less than six months and the shamed Republican party won’t be able to take an office for another twenty years. Win, win.

Encouraging a foreign government to interfere is treasonous.

To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t even laughing when I first saw him sailing down the escalator when he announced he was running. (okay, maybe I did giggle a little, because ridiculous!) Just seeing him in commercials for The Apprentice was enough for me. He reminds me so much of our governor. Every morning I wake up and see his face on my TV and I want to hurl the remote though it.

I just didn’t think it could possibly happen. That he would be taken seriously, I mean. Partly that is because he is exactly like LeJerk. But because LeJerk doesn’t have access to state secrets that he is a less severe threat (and he doesn’t have the celebrity status to gain higher office). God help us all.

Also, I’m still hoping against hope he’ll wake up one day and realize what he’s doing. This is the POTUS! This is not a reality show. Then again, the way things look, it is turning out to be that way, isn’t it?

We don’t accept this reaction in children. I don’t understand why people think it’s ok in an adult. At this point even people I know who liked him in the spring no longer think it’s good. Quite frankly, I don’t understand a lot of what is going on. The Bernie backers who won’t vote for Hilary, what’s that all about? How can you support Bernie’s beliefs and allow Trump to become president. I’m off the soapbox now.

I think most of the Bernie backers have (or will soon) come around. The real fear is that people will stay home. Get out the vote will be vital this year.

Everything about this is nauseating, ridiculously insane, and horrifying. It stuns me into an almost apathetic immobility – but that’s what they hope for – that people will never believe such a dangerous clown could be elected. I thought the Bush years were the worst I would ever see in my lifetime. I was wrong. So wrong. Unbelievable, yet this is really happening. Terrifying. On every level.

I saw Senator Tom Harkin in March 2003, days before we entered Iraq. I said, “Bush is the worst president of my lifetime.” I won’t claim Harkin agreed with me, but he did nod, at least in acknowledgment. And that was the early Bush years… to imagine that it could be even so much worse, and that we might pine nostalgically for Bush… oh my.
