Love is… A Woman’s Best Friend? Hmmm… #SundayBlogShare

Under the chair

Duncan, In his early morning “Mom’s Reading Blogs” position.

It isn’t often that I wake up and find I’ve already half-written a blog post. But that happened to me today.

In a post describing what “Love Is” my bloggin’ buddy Barb Taub shared our combined love/horror stories.

Duncan, you all will be happy to know, is out of the nipping/shoe eating phase. Now he collects my shoes into his crate when I’m not looking and slobbers all over them.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times: Dogs are gross.

Barb Taub

In her blog today, the incredible Suzie of Suzie81speaks challenges us, “We want to know from you what love is.”  She really wants an answer. The media is on alert.

So I started thinking about all the people I love: the grumpy Prince Curmudgeonly I married 30+ years ago, four amazing children, the UMAG (Universe’s Most Adorable Grandbaby), friends who would bail me out (or not because they’d be in the next cell over), family, and my dog.

But there’s only one who loves me with a single-minded intensity that eclipses all else—with the possible exception of meal times. And her ball. Being the center of my dog’s universe is heady stuff (even if it’s a canine universe that often smells pretty ripe, regurgitates disgusting things under my dining room chair, and farts a lot).

As I looked over old posts to see if I had any non-canine stories of love, I realized…

  1. Ugh, wish I could have a dog… sooooo allergic though. But I’d be a hero to the kids forever (Trent sits back to deliberate, but alas, no coffee yet…).

My blog ideas, half-formed or not, come to me in the shower. I am not the first person to say that, I think.

    • Should I tell your kids that there are hypoallergenic dog breeds? Portuguese Water Dogs and poodles. And now the various ‘oodle’ combos (pick s size any size). My husband is allergic, too. Tough. There will always be a dog in my life!

I have actually billed clients time for my eureka moments in the shower. I wonder why so many things seem, ahem, clearer there?

Widget also perfected the sneak French kiss, and is especially pleased with her skills when she reaches my teeth (eeeewwwwww). Dogs are gross – and life would be a lot less fun and full without them!

  3. We had a chihuahua until just recently, who was always afraid of me, even though I’m not the dog-beater type. But she still loved me. She would follow me around everywhere. But whenever I turned around and looked at her, she would run and hide. She also loved my wife, and would sneakily steal her shoes when she left them on the floor, and hide them in odd places. And speaking of being sneaky, I’d like to offer you a sneak preview of my new blog, at https://unicorniks.wordpress.com.-Tippy Gnu (aka Glazed).

  4. Dogs are gross yes but they are so awesome! We lost ours and my husband is now allergic…. so sadly we are dog-less

    • Oh I am so sorry — it is so hard losing your furry friend. And not being able to replace him/her must make it all the harder. My husband insists every time that we will not get another. He loses!

There are hypo-allergenic dog breeds, though — Portuguese Water Dogs and poodles. Some of the ‘oodles’ are as well. The breeds that are mixed with poodles maintain their hypoallergenic-ness, I’m told.

  5. Wow. Obviously, Labs are a challenge! Makes me feel actually lucky about our Yorkie, Winston. When we first adopted him he chewed the corners of the wall moldings and he was dense about the bathroom thing. He still, very occasionally, thinks of the dining room as the outhouse, especially when it’s really cold outside. It’s logical – hardly anybody goes in there but him. As for chewing now, just about any of his dozen or so stuffed animals will do just fine, especially the ones that squeak.

    • Winston — love the name! I actually wanted a small dog this time around. My husband wouldn’t hear of it. Instead I have a 65 lb bundle of energy. He is incredibly sweet though.

Yorkies are tough little guys. The folks I babysat for when I was in high school had one (named ‘Blimey’– which was perfect for his personality). One day Blime ran through a screen door out onto a balcony and dove into their pool (shallow end). He emerged unscathed, somehow!

  6. Didn’t go to Barb’s post yet, but yours made me think of what I told somebody about a former friend: there’s a reason a lot of dogs are named “Dammit!” I felt like my former friend’s name had transformed to “Dammit Tim!”

  7. I also am COMPLETELY impressed that I could wake up with no blog post ideas, do a blatant copy and paste from the comments section, and have a post five minutes later. I think this could catch on big…
