The Gift of Time

My bloggin’ buddy, 99, asked me a couple of days ago to write something lighthearted for her. I’m still working on it — but until I come up with something, I thought I would re-blog this post of hers. She wrote a heartfelt New Year’s wish that I would like to see all of us practice. Of course, there will be fewer humor blogs if we do … but that may be the sacrifice we all have to make for a better, nicer world.

Happy, healthy 2016 to all my bloggin’ buddies and all their loved ones too.

  1. I am trying hard to get to all my favorites and minimally wish them a very happy 2016. It will be a rocky year for those of us who follow the political animals, but we should have some fun.

    Happy New Year Elyse.

  2. I found a note on my car that read “Kindness is Contagious” with a candy cane attached. I believe this to be true and never once thought that the candy cane could have been poison until just now.

  3. Miss Elyse, you have surprised me (again!). Thank you ever so much for the re-blog. That’s a little bit like the blogging equivalent of landing a spot on the Tonight Show. The accumulation of fine folks you have that visit your blog are a treasure, so thanks for sharing them with me, even if only by association. You have surely made me smile.

As for that “lighthearted bit of writing”, I will gladly accept this in exchange, although your Hillary’s Chicken entry today filled the bill quite nicely. It’s a long time between now and November. You might just need a bit of herbed chicken breasts to help you gird your loins. There does appear to be one oversight in the list of ingredients. Wine. Lots of whine. ‘Cause you know we’re gonna hear lots of whining between now and then. 🙂

    • This was such a nice post, 99, that I had to post it. And really, I had a hard time coming up with anything silly before the stroke of midnight. With the effects of some New Year’s Eve alcohol, though, everything looked better this morning!

I figured I will be eating Hillary’s Chicken a lot this year. Good thing it’s tasty. And easy. And I have to say, while I was lukewarm on her candidacy, I’ve paid more attention in the last few months. I will be proud to vote for her.

      • I was wary, and skeptical, but I’ve warmed up to the idea myself. Now that January has officially rolled around, it’s a visual reminder that it’s time to get busy. I am NOT looking forward to the ruckus that will ensue, but I’m still determined to sway a few votes, one person at a time. Starting within my own family, of course. I think I’m already making headway with my niece. Start with the easier targets, and tread carefully. 🙂

        • Yes, that’s the way to go. I’m trying to figure out what to do to help with the campaign — I used to do phone work (can’t canvas for health reasons). But now I don’t eve accept those calls! What’s an activist to do!

          • Do what you are already doing … keep speaking up, and keep shining a light on the insanity exploding in every direction. And even though I know that prayer is not your thing, now is the perfect time for filling up our Universe with heartfelt intentions. I’m practically on my knees, hoping against hope that sanity prevails. 🙂

            • I’m actually pretty confident that it will prevail in November. But I really do fear that Trump has allowed racism out of the bag. Now it is not something to be ashamed of, but proclaimed from a podium. Scary.

              • Horrifying, really. I keep waiting for more voices to rise up and scream into the void that such blatant intolerance cannot be allowed to exist in this world, never mind from someone who ridiculously thinks he is a candidate to represent the masses. Last night while watching bits of Carson Daily’s New Year show, I saw Nene Leakes defending The Donald, and I had to quell the urge to throw things at the television. The only way I could calm myself was to remember it was Nene Leakes. Enough said. 🙂

                • Actually, if I knew the names of half of the jerks on those shows last night, I’d have a month of blog posts. They were uniformly horrible. I didn’t know who Nene Leakes is so I looked her up. I saw a bit of that show … god it was awful! All of them were. We switched channels every 3.2 seconds it seemed. Jenny McCarthy? Really? Peoople want to celebrate with HER? And anderson Cooper and Kathy-I-will-try-to-be-an-even-bigger-asshole-next-year. It was a rough way to end the year!

Sadly, my neighborhood was filled with the explosions of way too many fireworks (and guns?), so most of the time I was just trying to keep the dogs from pacing nervously, or barking out their DANGER warnings. But overall, the choice of which channel to watch was a lose-lose.

But, hey, the air was crisp and cool, and we had recently had lots of rain (thank goodness, so the ground was soaked), and no one shot any bottle rockets through my front windows, so I guess it ended well enough. 🙂

                    • And Guy Lombardo! I remember being able to choose between Guy and Dick. Not a mishmash of crap!!!

Oh well. We had a lot of fireworks and maybe guns here too. Oh well. Duncan was noisy! But we were all safe, too!

  5. I don’t make “resolutions” but I try to address habits/behavior as I understand them better. I’ve been working on kindness, trying to be more careful about how I treat people, what I say and how I say it, offer appreciation and compassion. Some of that is “easy” and some is not as much. But it’s time to step it up, and work harder at it. Not a resolution, but a habit to work toward. Thanks for this lovely reblog. I’ll be sure to comment on the original, as well.

Happy New Year, Elyse. I’m glad I found you.

  6. Glazed

Happy New Year, Elyse! Personally I think we’d have MORE humor in this world if everyone tried to do something kind every day. My Dad had a great sense of humor, and his motto was, “Try to make someone smile every day.” By the way, your posts this year often put a smile on my face. So thanks for that. 🙂

    • And you’ve done the same for me, Glazed. May 2016 be a happy, healthy, dentist- and terrorist free one!

    • I agree with Glazed, in that I believe a bit more kindness actually exponentially increases the humor in this world. After all, if we can’t poke fun at one another from time to time, then it’s all just too serious for me. In another dimension, I’m the one with the rainbow gossamer wings and a red ball on my nose. Smiles have a way of easing sorrows. 🙂

      • I do agree, 99. And besides, complaining really never helps anyway. It doesn’t change a thing. so you might as well just put on a happy face~

        • Oh, that was just the shot in the arm I needed this morning (okay, it’s afternoon … hell, practically EVENING, but you know what I mean). My clock is all out of whack today, but it’s hard not to enjoy the physicality and simplicity of Dick Van Dyke. Perhaps a little too much HAPPY, but still managed to squeeze a smile out of me today. Thank you!
