One year ago today, my little family expanded. Duncan — an Australian Shepherd/English Springer Spaniel (and we think Flat-coated Retriever — had arrived. And life hasn’t been quite the same.
After an initial health scare that sent him to the doggy ER (and nearly to doggy heaven) he’s grown up to be a great guy. I just thought I’d give you all an update on the beast.
Da Da Duncan — Through the year:
Duncs isn’t the most photogenic of dogs. And he’s camera shy. But I do try …
* * *
Duncan’s 1st year with us is just the latest thing that I’m celebrating this week. Somehow in the past week we’ve seen Obamacare saved, Marriage of people to whom they love permitted nationwide, and the overdue retirement of the Stars and Bars. While I don’t pretend that all of the opponents of any of these measures are going to take defeat gracefully, well, they were defeated. And that is damn good news all around!
Aww. What a prince. And what a week!

Thanks for following along with the furball … and it was so much fun to watch Scalia fume …

Duncan was a cute pup, no doubt about that. And he has grown into a soulful, handsome guy. You did good, Momma!
And this has been a pretty good week for news, as weeks and news go. Hey, they nabbed the two fugitives who escaped from the the prison near my former home, too. One dead, the other critically wounded. Imagine the tax dollars spent on that manhunt!

Thanks, Lorna. He isn’t quite so mournful in real life — he just looks all pathetic when the camera points his way!
Yes, I’m glad they got those two guys too. A good week for all. Except them. And the GOP. But you know, I can live with that!

Yeah, what a circus that whole Party is becoming! And Jon Stewart is retiring…

Time flies! He’s just as cute as ever, though he has grown into those ears a bit.

He HAS grown into them. Perhaps that is how one should guestimate a puppy’s adult size — by the ears. He’s bigger than we expected — about 60 pounds! We were expecting 40. But we’ll keep him 😉

Jaded, I missed this! I am so glad too. It was a truly horrible day, he went from being perfectly fine to nearly dying. It was terrifying. And expensive — but worth it.

If I understand correctly the reaction of conservatives to the gay marriage ruling, you are now obligated to marry Duncan.

Does this mean he gets to sleep in the bed too?

From what I understand, Obama’s jack-booted thugs will stop by your house in a few days to go over the details.

My how quickly they grow up. Cute dog. And I celebrate with you a few more milestones toward equality achieved this week, with just a few thousand or so more to go.

Thanks, Glazed, he’s a good dog. I hope you’re not gonna turn into a s’more…
But yes, there is a ways to go, but we need to accept success gracefully on those occasions when we actually win! And then keep going …

Hooray for Duncan’s first year anniversary … and he looks so innocent!

Thanks, Frank. He is innocent. Whatever happened, it must have been somebody else … (actually, since John works from home, he doesn’t have as many opportunities to destroy the house as our other dogs did!

A week to celebrate! I will raise a glass of the best stuff I got. Duncan is super cute, by the way. But you already know that, dude.

It really is a week to celebrate, isn’t it. I was holding my breath on Obamacare, and quite surprised on the gay marriage decision (what is the problem with the opponents — how the hell does it impact THEM? Oy vey.)
And Duncan does know he is adorable — but the pictures really don’t do him justice. His fur is camouflaged so he fades into the background.

Just happy that, as screwed up as we are as people, that we often get things right. It’s amazing how often we get things right – makes me think that perhaps we’re not that screwed up after all. I may be turning into an optimist… what’s happening to me???

I have a half a mind to get rid of the other half. While flying back to the fair country, of course.
Sleep is underrated, know that? I feel and think much better after actually closing my eyes. Weird that.

Duncan does look a trifle sad in pictures, doesn’t he? But I love the one where he’s looking down. It’s like catching an introvert in a rare smile. 😉 Either way, he’s a cutie.
Yes, it’s been a good week for SCOTUS decisions, no doubt!

Actually, he is kind of introverted. When we take him to the dog park, he just stands there and doesn’t play. It is rather pathetic. But when we take him to the wooded park where we’re not supposed to let him run off-leash, he has a blast with the other dogs … strange guy. He’s probably like me, he likes being daring!
And yes, hasn’t it been a great week? I really didn’t expect so much progress in one short period of time.

I know. Progress doesn’t seem to happen much in Washington!

Awww. Happy Birthday Duncan! He is gorgeous Elyse. As to American politics – YEEEE Ha! Thus is all great news. I’m sure there will be some discension (I’ve commented positively on same sex marriage on a few blogs and drew some serious name calling, including – but not limited to – fascist) but as you say, suck it up buttercup! ha! This is the first time in quite a while that I have been honesty able to say – I’m proud of you America (but not you Scalia) 😀

He is actually far more handsome in real life — pictures don’t capture him well at all.
As for the week, well, it was something, you fascist, you. Seriously, folks on both sides are passionate, but … you, a fascist? Oh brother.

Australian shepards are my favorite breed and it looks like Duncan got the best parts! He is adorably less-than-perfect, just like I prefer my dogs and my friends. Happy anniversary Duncan!

Yes, it’s a great breed! He is sweet and smart and handsome. So yes, he did get the best parts. (The blue merle is more black marble now, though you can’t see it in the pictures.)
But you’re right — perfect dogs, like perfect people? Bah!
