Sometimes, even a die-hard Democrat and respecter of smart people everywhere like me can’t believe what I hear Republicans say. But, of course, with YouTube, I get to See and Hear all kinds of things. I can replay them in case I missed something. I can marvel that, yup, they did, in fact say something as stupid as that. Or this. Yup. There’s proof.
Oregon State Representative Bill Post eulogized the passing of Leonard Nimoy on the floor of the legislature.

This makes me cringe… even though I appreciate the joke, because I just think it isn’t the right forum to do something like this in. (It pains me to say that… being such a silly person myself) But I would like to think it’s a bit indecorous to do this like this.
That being said… as someone who aligns himself more with an R than a D… I don’t like how quick people are to lambaste roughly half of the US population based on a representative’s misplaced silly joke. (I feel like I’m swimming in a shark tank in this blog’s comment space… and in living in California.)
I’d just love to see people show more respect to each other. FROM both sides of the aisle TO both sides of the aisle.

Ok, well… I’ve had my fair share of nerdy friends that are into D&D, video games, etc (I count myself among them) and I have seen how enthusiastic they can get about this or that. (Anyone who’s ever gone to a comic-con or lived near one will know this to be true.)
So perhaps he was just expressing his inner Spock fanboi… in an inappropriate setting. Or maybe… those stuffy political rooms need some light-hearted fare such as what that guy delivered?

Great idea. Except for all that security.
I’ve been wanting to write a post about how, if these elected officials are going to permit any random person to have a gun, then they shouldn’t be able to hide behind all the security precautions they have. Let them take their chances like the rest of us.

I wish congress didn’t do reactionary politics. I’m not a huge gun support lobbyist, but I am completely of the mindset that the bad guys will always have guns… no matter how illegal they are and how many good guys are allowed to have them. It’s not the gun that makes you a bad guy.

It is not only a bad guys v. Good guys argument. People with a gun in their household are more likely to have an accidental shooting. A homicide. A suicide.
I can accept that there are people who need guns for their own protection — but the stats on “home invasions” are low. Snakes, bears, etc. yeah. I get that.
But who needs an AK 47? Nobody. What person with a psychiatric condition needs one? And who the fuck needs 3,000 rounds like the shooter at the Colorado theatre was able to buy on fucking line?
There are reasonable compromises that could be reached. But the NRA keeps whipping folks up. “Obama is common’ for your guns!” Well the man has been prez for 6 years and it hasn’t happened yet.
But we let our children die. For “FREEDOM”. Bullshit.

Yes, accidental shootings by children are a thing… and I can’t think of a reason why someone would need an AK… so I’m not down for Johnny-random to have an AK. Nobody’s “letting our children die” … there are scum bags that are going off the deep end and killing them.
Can’t stop random acts of violence from happening, as horrible as that is. Even if the guy only had a 9mm, it would still be tragic.

You can’t stop random acts of violence. But you can cut it down significantly. Had the Newtown shooter had a 9mm there would have been fewer deaths and perhaps he might have been stopped while he tried to reload. We will never know because we let people have these weapons that are designed, DESIGNED for mass murder. And then we are shocked, shocked when mass murders happens.
We are a stupid society.
In Australia there was one mass shootings. The people passed a law severely restricting gun ownership. The not at all surprising result is there have been zero — ZERO — shootings as a result.
That’s not exactly what happens here.
I have written a lot on gun control and the NRA. We’ve kind of come to the end of this comment stream. Feel free to look at those other posts and comment there.

I have a very hard time believing that statistic about Australia. The result is very surprising to me. Legislating a bunch of things is not a good answer. Personal responsibility is the better answer.
However, I would be interested in seeing the info supporting that statistic. I’m ok with finding myself in the wrong and adjusting my way of thinking.
A 9mm would have had a significantly lesser capacity to kill. But did that guy own the M4 legally in the first place? If it was his legally… hrmm… if it wasn’t his (his mother’s?) then changing the law wouldn’t have prevented him from having it.
There are levels to this issue… I just don’t agree with the way people advantageously jump on tragedy as a way to legitimize their opinions.
Violent video games? Practically all of them are violent and I think that is so much BUNK that people are still trying to blame video games… but I understand that people have a hard time wrapping their heads around these kinds of senseless horrible tragedies and so… maybe it’s therapeutic to be able to blame something… anything.
“It’s the guns!” … no.. it’s the kid that performed the shooting. He was 20 years old… he’s an adult.. he knew what he was doing because he had been doing research on the other school shootings…
It’s not as simple as “we’re stupid”.

I fell for that. I looked at his record as Texas governor and damn, if he didn’t reach across the aisle and get some stuff done. He got to DC and–pfffft–that was out the window. My bad.

I do have a thing for the GOP. But they have earned it. I helped Reagan get elected by voting for John Anderson. But I watched the party go from being filled with (mostly men) who w ere willing to work for their country and with the Dems. The divide was not very wide. But, Reagan brought in, and encouraged the petulance. I will never forgive.
I would be a Republican today if folks like John Chaffee and Robert Stafford were still there. They drafted the Clean Air act and the Clean Water Act. They believed in science and data and education.

I’ve voted Rep before and I’ll do it again if the party ever gets its barrings. I’m not a big believer in party ideology. Once you become unconditionally married to a single philosophy, you surrender your objectivity. I prefer to be nimble.

Good point. OK, here’s what I think. Politicians seem to have a hard time separating entertainment from reality. It reminds me of when Dan Quayle criticized a TV character, Murphy Brown, for motherhood out of wedlock. These guys watch too much TV.
